Great Britain World Record Holders
ISU Short Track Speed Skating World Cup Round 6 – Dresden Final Day
Great Britain Shatter World Record in the Men’s 5000m Relay
The Great Britain Short Track Speed Skating Team’s superb form continued today as they smashed the 5000m Relay World Record by over two tenths of a second, posting a new time of 6 minutes 37.877 seconds.
The new World Record came at the end of an eventful competition which had seen the Relay Team win their first round convincingly, only to fall and finish last in their semi final which meant that they could only qualify for the B Final, for positions 5 to 7 overall.
It was in that B Final, skating against Russia and the Netherlands, where the Team stormed to the new World’s Best time, which the teams from Canada, Korea, Germany and China could not better in the A Final. This means that Great Britain will be reining World Record Holders as they enter the World Championships in Sheffield in March.
The 4 skaters who set the new world record are:
|Paul Stanley||Jack Whelbourne|
In addition to the relay success, two of the Great Britain Skaters chalked up a further 3 top 8 places in the individual events during the 3 days of competition. These were:
Richard Shoebridge who finished just outside the medals in the second Men’s 500m in 4th
Jon Eley who finished 7th in the first and 5th in the second 500m events
Paul Stanley, who won a Silver Medal last week, had to settle for 10th place in the second 500m
Stuart Horsepool, the Great Britain Short Track Performance Director said “This is the first time Great Britain has held a Relay World Record in Short Track Speed Skating and I am extremely proud of the Team. We obviously have the speed and now just need to hone our tactics to bring medal success in the World Championships. So come out and support your team in Sheffield – they deserve it!”
The 2011 ISU World Short Track Speed Skating Championships will be held between the 11th and 13th of March at the Motorpoint Arena Sheffield. Tickets can be obtained through the Championships website at www.worldshorttrack2011.co.uk
