Ian is one of the members of the squad who has recently graduated from the junior ranks. Having begun skating at the age of 10 in his home town of Guilford, Ian soon realised his speed skating skill and committed himself to the sport.

At the age of 15 he was representing Great Britain at the Junior level and made his first Senior performance four years later. He is a five-time British Junior record holder and recorded an impressive 10th place at the World Junior Championships in 2008.

Ian has just completed his degree in Graphic Design, winning Best New blood award 2011 at D&AD New Blood exhibition in London. He is now training full time on training with the Squad in the run up to Sochi 2014.


ON THE ICE
What is your favourite distance to skate and why? The 1000m because itís fast but has an important tactical element.
What is your greatest achievement to date? Five Junior British records and coming 10th at the Junior World Championships.
What was your highlight of 2011/2012 season? Skating in the World Championships in Shanghai. Also being part of the GB Ambition Programme, experiencing the Olympics in London, the village and seeing Britain winning gold in the velodrome.
What is your sporting ambition? To win a medal at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Games.
What is your favourite skating memory? When I became the 1000m British Champion in 2010.

OFF THE ICE
Who is your sporting hero? Mo Farrah and Bradley Wiggins
Who inspired you most at the 2012 London Olympic and Paralympic Games and why? Witnessing Chris Hoy and the menís sprint team win gold with a new world record in the velodrome, and everyone in the crowd singing the national anthem.
Life after skating:i I want to be a graphic designer. I have an online portfolio (www.ianupcott.com) so that is something that Iíd like to do full-time after skating.
